Bulls News: Maddon hints at Montgomery in the 2017 starting rotation |
Cubs skipper Joe Maddon was on 670 The Score with Matt Spiegel and Jon Greenberg on Tuesday afternoon and was asked about left-hander Mike Montgomery's role after the departure of starter Jason Hammel.
“He’s got a solid foot in the door for that,” Maddon said about Montgomery's chances to start. Maddon thinks that Montgomery has some of the best stuff in the game. "Montgomery, I’m telling you man, this guy is a legitimate major league starter,” Maddon said. “He’s going to win a lot of major league baseball games. The big thing with him is we have to keep him on point, on task and have him understand how to utilize his stuff because his stuff is that good.” Montgomery ended up getting the save in the clinching game seven win in the 2016 World Series. In 2016, he was 4-5 with a 3.52 ERA with 92 strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP. During the 2016 postseason, he had a 3.14 ERA in 14 1/3 innings. For his career, he has a 3.51 ERA with 156 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP.
