WATCH: Tom Ricketts on the Cody Bellinger situation

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts addressed the media on Monday, fielding questions about the status of free agent slugger Cody Bellinger.

“First of all, there has been some discussions, but just it hasn’t become a negotiation yet, and so until they’re ready to really negotiate, then there’s not much we can do," Ricketts said. "I don't tell Jed what to do but you just have to wait until it gets serious until you get talking about what the end money amounts are. We will just see how it goes."

The Cubs are just playing the waiting game.

"I’m like everyone else, we are just waiting. Waiting for whenever he and his agent are going to engage. It could be any time now or it could be a few weeks. We’ll see where it goes."

Ricketts shared that he doesn't talk to Bellinger's super agent Scott Boras.

"I don’t talk to Scott. One of his signature moves is to go talk to the owner. When you do that, you undermine the credibility of your GM. Inserting yourself into that negotiation, I don’t think that helps. I don’t talk to him."

Bellinger had an impressive 2023 season where he showcased his power with 26 home runs, 29 doubles, and racked up 97 RBIs, 95 runs, and 20 stolen bases, along with a solid .881 OPS.

Currently, the Cubs are going to the regular season with PCA and Mike Tauchman manning centerfield.
