Bulls News: Bryant smacks two homers to beat Dodgers in extras |
LOS ANGELES -- The Cubs trailed almost the whole game but fought back to tie it at four apiece in the ninth inning to take the game to the 10th inning in front of 48,609 fans at Dodger Stadium. Kris Bryant proved why he is a prime MVP candidate as he hit two homers on the day giving him a National League leading 35 home runs, and giving the Cubs another comeback win with a score of 6-4.
Fans were heard throughout the stadium chanting M-V-P, M-V-P after his second homer. Bryant has seven homers in 12 career games against the Dodgers and twenty road homers total this season. The Chicago Cubs who had won 22 of their last 27 games brought their game to Dodger Stadium (a Billy Joel concert took over Wrigley Field) to hopefully improve their already solid record. Mike Montgomery made his second start for the Cubs in Friday evening’s game as he faced the Dodgers for the first time. Addison Russell hit a two-out RBI single to score Kris Bryant who reached on a fielder’s choice. The run put the Cubs on the board and ahead early with a score of 1-0. The Dodgers answered right back however as Chase Utley had a RBI single to tie the game at 1. The Dodgers took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Justin Turner earned a groundout RBI as he scored Howie Kendrick giving the Dodgers the 2-1 lead. The Dodgers struck again in the 4th inning as Kendrick grounded out into a double play, scoring Utley in the process. The Cubs went into the 5th inning trailing 3-1. The Cubs added a run to their score in the 5th inning as Anthony Rizzo singled to center scoring Montgomery as they still trailed 2-3. Montgomery pitched five innings allowing five hits, three runs, and struck out five. The Dodgers added to their lead in the 7th inning as Adrian Gonzalez homered to right center giving his team a 4-2 lead. Kris Bryant was back at it again as he homered to center in the 8th inning, but the Cubs still trailed 4-3. Jason Heyward led off the 9th inning with a double and was able to score on a wild pitch by the pitcher Jansen, putting each team with four runs apiece, sending the game to extra innings. Bryant smacked a second home run of the night in the tenth inning, scoring Dexter Fowler putting the Cubs ahead 6-4. Kris Bryant, Albert Pujols, and Frank Robinson are the only MLB players in history with 60+ homers total and 12+ WAR in their first two seasons. Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman finished off the Dodgers in the 10th inning to get his 30th save of the season. Cubs will continue play at Dodger Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Jason Hammel will face off against Julio Urias on the pitcher’s mound. Late Night with @KrisBryant_23.https://t.co/b7PCzsso4r
