Roster Move: Cubs officially release Eric Hosmer

The Chicago Cubs have officially released veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer, confirmed by the MLB.com profile page.

Hosmer was designated for assignment last week and went unclaimed by teams, making him a free agent once again.

In 100 plate appearances, the veteran first baseman posted a lackluster batting line of .234/.280/.330 with only two home runs.

The Cubs signed Hosmer to a one-year deal during the past offseason but the lack of production and rookie Matt Mervis' talents pushed Hosmer off the roster.

From a financial perspective, the Cubs incurred minimal costs when signing Hosmer. He was owed just the Major League minimum salary of $720,000.

Although Hosmer's release from the Cubs marks the end of his tenure in Chicago, it opens up possibilities for both him and other teams in the league.

As for the Cubs, they will look to utilize their remaining first base options, such as Matt Mervis, Trey Mancini, and Patrick Wisdom, as they continue to navigate the season and build for the future.
