Cubs activate Matt Duffy from IL, infielder designated for assignment

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Matt Duffy off the 60-day injured list and designated infielder Eric Sogard for assignment.

Duffy, 30, landed on the injured list on May 25 (retroactive to May 23) with a low back strain. In five injury rehabilitation games with Triple-A Iowa from July 13-20, he batted .313 (5-for-16) with a double, RBI and two walks.

The right-handed hitting Duffy is batting .278 (25-for-90) with four doubles, one home run, 12 RBI and a .377 on-base percentage in 38 games for Chicago this season. He hit .312 (24-for-77) with 16 runs scored, three doubles, a home run, 12 RBI and a .400 on-base percentage in 25 games from April 21-May 18.

Duffy owns a career .282 average (481-for-1,706) with 23 home runs and 181 RBI in 490 major league games in all or part of six seasons with San Francisco (2014-16), Tampa Bay (2016-19) and the Cubs (2021). The Long Beach, Calif., native signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on December 16, 2020.

Sogard, 35, has appeared in 78 games for Chicago this season, hitting .249 (42-for-169) with six doubles, one triple, one home runs and 12 RBI.
